apa, britam big winners at aki agents of the year awards 2017

APA Insurance won the General Insurance Company of the Year Award, while Britam Insurance won Life Insurance Company of the Year Award during the AKI Agents of the Year Awards (AAYA) 2017 held on Friday, 9th March 2018 at Safari Park Hotel. Jubilee Insurance clinched the most improved company of the year award having had 93 qualifying agents compared to last year’s 22 qualifiers.

This annual event is a celebration of top performing insurance sales agents and companies for the year ended 2017. A total of 293 insurance sales agents were able to meet the rigorous prerequisite criteria to qualify as top performers in the industry. 67 per cent of the qualifying agents were women.

Other winners at this year’s competition were Anastasia Muthoni from Britam Insurance who was recognised as the agent who brought in the most business. Mr. Samson Muthee from Kenindia Assurance was presented with the Persistency Award which recognises agents with a good record of business retention over the last three years.
Speaking during the event where he was the guest of honour, Mr. Joshua Chepkwony urged the insurance industry to partner with telecommunications companies to provide convenient solutions to insurance consumers given the fact that today’s consumer views technology as an enabler. He also noted that the consumer is changing as they are more tech savvy, more educated and have a wide array of choices for insurance service providers.

AKI Chairman, Mr. Patrick Tumbo noted that the Integrated Motor Insurance Database System (IMIDS) is now live. IMIDS is a reservoir of data that will provide insights and trends on the motor insurance class of business and it will be available to all the insurance companies. This will be a key resource when it comes to making key decisions regarding motor insurance and curbing fraud.

Insurance sales agents form a critical element of the insurance industry as they contribute towards an estimated 40 per cent of insurance premiums. In as much as technology will be an enabler of convenient service, not all insurance products can be sold from end to end including claims processing online. Some insurance products such as medical insurance still require human intervention. Given this, the role of the insurance sales agent will still be necessary going forward.

About AKI Agents of the Year Awards (AAYA)
The AKI Agents of the Year Awards, is an annual event whose sole purpose is to bring together the insurance industry to recognise top performing insurance sales agents and companies.

The event also motivates insurance sales agents to sell more policies and at the same time also sell high value policies. The competition is also a way to guard against mis-selling and improve on after sales services to retain customers. In other words, reduce the level at which policies are cancelled or terminated by customers before they mature or are claimed.

The Association of Kenya Insurers, the umbrella body of all insurance companies in Kenya, works in liaison with the member companies to develop qualifying criteria for the competition.

Since inception in 2002, AAYA has only involved life insurance sales agents and group life business. Since 2016, the competition included the general insurance sales agents.
