Mr. Hassan Bashir, Group CEO Takaful Insurance of Africa was elected as the Board Chairman of the Association of Kenya Insurers during the 2018 Annual General Meeting held on 22nd March 2018.

While addressing members soon after his election, Mr. Bashir stated that during his term he will focus on realising the goals set out in the Associations Strategic plan, “with your help we will invest in research and development, champion customer service, strengthen self-regulation, improve underwriting quality and pay claims more efficiently.”

Mr. Bashir comes in at a critical time when underwriters will be required to implement the Risk Based Capital and adopt new International Financial Reporting Standards. The insurance industry is also positioned to play a critical role in the Government’s big four agenda: Insuring the assets and workers in manufacturing sector; agriculture insurance for food security; medical insurance to achieve universal healthcare and investing in real estate to meet the housing gap.
Before his election as chairman, Mr. Bashir served as one of the two deputy chairmen of the Association for the last two years. He takes over from Mr. Patrick Tumbo, CEO Jubilee Insurance who held the position since 2016. During his tenure, Mr. Tumbo oversaw the operationalization of the IMIDS system that is expected to curb fraud in the motor insurance sector. Other Board members elected during the AGM include: Mr. Asok Gosh, CEO Occidental Insurance, Mr. Mathew Koech, CEO, Fidelity Shield Insurance, Ms. Catherine Igathe, CEO AIG Kenya, Mr. Tom Gitogo, Group CEO CIC Insurance Group, Mr. Jerim Otieno, Group Managing Director, Life Business Old Mutual and Mr. Joshua Njiru MD, Madison Insurance.

Other serving board members include Mr. James Ngunjiri, CEO Pacis Insurance, Mr. Andrew Greenwood, CEO Prudential Life and Mr. Vijay Srivastava CEO, GA Insurance. Outgoing Chairman, Mr. Patrick Tumbo will sit in the board as an Ex-Officio member.


The Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI) was established in 1987 as an independent non-profit making consultative and advisory body for the insurance industry.
AKI is responsible for promoting cooperation among its members, protecting and prompting the members’ common interests, raising awareness about insurance, market research, and capacity building. The Association currently has 52 members
